How To Make Students Speak In English

Making the students speak in English may sound easy, but it can be tiresome sometimes. You may find yourself in a situation whereby 20-50 percent of the students in your class speak different languages, or they may not talk as much. As such, you should not by any means insinuate that their language is forbidden or inferior to English. Regardless, progressive English learning requires most of the communication to be in English. The teaching process may begin with baby steps, but eventually, you will enjoy the fruits of perseverance. Here are some of the tips that will guide you on how to make students speak in english.

Progressive Learning

As you begin the classes on day one, make your expectations clear to your students. Making them aware of what you expect from them will enable you to achieve your goal quickly. In addition, creating an agreement between them can help keep them on their toes. These promises are essential. For instance, you can have your students make promises such as ‘I promise to speak in English.’ Such will act as a reminder and help the students speak much of English, and eventually, perfect it. Also, always go back to those promises from time to time during the course as necessary.

Learn Your students’ Names

Did you know it is very hectic to control your class if you don’t know your students’ names? It is very critical to know their names. For example, if one of the students speaks in a local language, it becomes easy for you to point them and ask, “Are you speaking in English? However, this has to be in a friendly tone or close to a joking tone. It is imperative to make the learning of your students’ names a priority. At least by the third class, you should commit their names to memory. Besides, it is embarrassing to seek a student’s attention by calling them the wrong names.

Be Optimistic

Finally, Sometimes you need to be more of a coach than a teacher to encourage your students. Until you have mastered your learners’ behavior, don’t forget to constantly remind your students not to speak in their local dialect. Go round the classroom and be aware of what’s going on by monitoring the students’ output. Giving up is not an option, and remember that change won’t come overnight but slowly until the students respond to your zeal.
