The Many Uses For Purple Howlite

Purple Howlite is known for its metaphysical properties:

Purple is Not Natural

Despite its properties, the color purple is not natural. It starts out as white howlite and is dyed while its being tumbled. The liquid dye seeps into the stone’s naturally porous body. Many stones are heated first and then dropped into a dye that is far cooler. The sudden temperature change causes the pores to open even more allowing the dye to seep deeper into the stone.

The Discovery of Howlite

Howlite starts out as a crystal or as calcium borosilicate hydroxide. It is found in evaporite deposits as a borate mineral. This mineral was first discovered in 1868 by a Canadian chemist named Henry How. Thus, the name Howlite. Gypsum quarry miners discovered it in Nova Scotia, Canada, considering its presence a menace disrupting the mining of gypsum. They alerted Henry How of its existence. It was later names after How by a colleague, James Dwight Dana. Its proper name is silico-boro-calcite.

The Healing Properties of Purple Howlite

Insomnia, anger, anxiety, and stress are the main disturbances Howlite is known for easing. Wearing a howlite stone or keeping one near you in a room trigger easing of the previously listed disturbances. Some people place it under a pillow to encourage restful sleep. Others keep it near a pet’s bed to get a hairy child to rest more fitfully.

While howlite was first found in Canada, Howlite has since been found in several regions around the globe: Turkey, Pakistan, Germany, Mexico, the USA, and Canada. Howlite is also paired with other stones to magnify their properties. Stones such as black obsidian, larimar, rose quartz crystal, and augelite also calm, relax, and encourage restful sleep.
